Coffret de brodeuse / Casket for an embroiderer
Voici un coffret de brodeuse récupéré dans la même ferme de la vallée de la Saône dans l'Ain, que les oeufs de pierre montrés il y a deux jours sur ce blog. Le coffret appartenait à une certaine Marie Morel, qui l'a utilisé au début du XXe siècle. La fermeture à clef fonctionne toujours. Qu'y avait-il à l'intérieur?
Here is a casket who belonged to a woman called Marie Morel, who used it for her embroidery projects at the beginning of the 20th century. She lived in the same farm near the river Saône, where the stone polished eggs shown two days ago on this blog were used. The key is still working very well. But what was inside?
On découvre d'abord des grilles de point de croix, dont un carnet Sajou de 1889, et des feuillets de papier calque avec des dessins à la main destinés à être reproduits sur des tissus. Tous les papiers sont brunis de rouille. Il y a des tas d'essais de M variés, comme il se doit pour Marie Morel.
On the top we discover old booklets with cross stitch charts, among which one booklet of the famous trade mark Sajou who was printed in 1889. Also there are old sheets of tracing paper with hand drawn designs to reproduce them on fabric. All the papers have a lot of spots of rust. And there are many various M, which is understandable for Marie Morel.
Le plus intéressant c'est le reste du contenu du coffret. Il y a un certain nombre de tampons, dont le caoutchouc est dur et écaillé, qui servaient à imprimer des initiales sur du tissu. A nouveau il y a plusieurs M, et quelques autres lettres. Surtout il y a une grande quantité de rouleaux en caoutchouc pour imprimer des motifs en continu sur des bandes ou le long de draps, de poignets de chemisiers, etc... Il y a des rouleaux de différentes largeurs. Les bouteilles d'encre sont sèches depuis belle lurette, et le tampon encreur tout desséché. Mais le plus fascinant, c'est une boite pleine de poudre bleue destinée à tracer un motif à travers les trous d'un papier calque, selon la technique utilisée par Pierre OBER pour dessiner ses nappes alsaciennes (voir article en date du 21 février).
The most interesting things are the other treasures in the casket. There are some rubberstamps (but the rubber is very hard now) who represent letters (several M again, and a few others) to stamp the letters on fabric to embroider them. And there are many rollerstamps to stamp uninterrupted designs on bands to embroider or along a sheet, or the wrists of a woman's shirt, and so on. There are various widths of rollers. The bottles of ink have been dry for many years now, but it's fascinating to find a full box of blue powder to use through holes made on the tracing paper (the same technique that we saw used by Pierre OBER, the man who draws on tablecloth in Alsace).
