La prière de la sérénité / Serenity prayer

Fin juin, lors d'une conversation avec des amis, un texte m'est revenu à l'esprit. Il s'agit de la Prière de la Sérénité,  qui doit sa notoriété au fait qu'elle a été adoptée dans le monde entier par le mouvemement des Alcooliques Anonymes (AA) comme support spirituel pour toute personne en lutte contre ses dépendances. Derrière le mot Dieu chacun peut mettre ce qui correspond à ses propres convictions tout en étant encouragé à discerner ce qu'il peut changer dans sa vie et ce qu'il ne peut pas, et à accepter sereinement cette situation.

Mon Dieu, donne-moi la sérénité

d'accepter les choses que je ne puis changer,

le courage de changer celles que je peux ,

et la sagesse d'en connaître la différence.

Je décide alors d'en faire un sampler, et je crée des illustrations d'inspiration japonaise qui me font penser à la sérénité. Rapidement le diagramme est terminé et toutes les fournitures achetées.
J'étais loin de penser à ce moment-là que quelques jours plus tard j'allais entrer à l'hôpital pour un séjour de plus de deux mois, à peine entrecoupés de quelques jours à la maison, ni même qu'à l'heure où j'écris ces lignes je serai encore en traitement.

Lorsque j'étais moins mal à l'hôpital, je reprenais mon ouvrage, et je l'ai finalement terminé. J'ai eu tout le loisir de penser au sens des paroles, qui ne sont pas si faciles à mettre en pratique. La sérénité, dans certains cas, ne peut être qu'un don de Dieu.

A présent le sampler terminé restera longtemps un souvenir de cet été difficile. Le diagramme et les explications sont à votre disposition sur le site de l'Atelier de la Colombe. 

It was the end of June, when I discussed with some friends and remembered a text called The Serenity Prayer. It owes its fame to the fact that it has been chosen by the  Alcoholics Anonymous worldwide since 1940 as a support to face the battle against the condition of life. Everybody can put his own meaning behind the world God, and is encouraged to discern what he can change in life, and what he cannot, then to accept this fact with serenity.

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Then I decided to use this prayer to make a sampler, adding my own Japanese designs, as they were linked with the idea of serenity for me. Soon the whole chart was finished, and I had the fabric and threads ready.

I had no idea then that I was just going for more than 2 months into the hospital, to face a heavy heart surgery, followed by a hard recovery which is not finished now yet unfortunately. When I felt better from time to time in hospital I went on cross stitching this sampler, and I had plenty of time to think about the meaning of the words. I must confess that serenity is not easy in difficult situations. It really must be given by God from above.
